SfN Blitz: Postgame Analysis
Now I can get back to watching
thisSfN 2010 is over, hangovers are subsiding, and - like the rain clouds here in San Diego - post-meeting illness is rolling in.
During the conference, however, the weather was absolutely beautiful! Which made it very easy to go out. Which made it very easy to get distracted. But being from San Diego, I was unfazed by the 70 degree weather in November, and had a pretty productive SfN (day 4 notwithstanding). Some thoughts:

- Those who do not allocate at least a little time to wander the poster hall aimlessly are missing out. Not only do you come across interesting work in other fields, but I found a couple posters directly related to my line of work tucked away in some seemingly random poster category.
- Speaking of posters, wouldn’t it be nice if presenters had pagers or something that visitors could buzz if they wanted to ask questions? I feel bad for the presenters just standing around, and it’s awkward deciding whether or not the poster is interesting enough to get into when the presenter is there staring at you. Let ‘em go off and visit neighboring posters, and , if buzzed, return to take people through their research.
- Favorite poster title: Cortical EEG correlation during Tower of Hanoi performance in young healthy males sexually aroused. That Tower of Hanoi…gets me every time.
- Water coolers in every presentation hall = awesome
- Is there any way SfN could simulcast lectures? There were several instances where I wanted to catch lecture A in room 1, lecture B in room 2, then lecture C in room 1. Problem is, transportation time prohibits this. But if we could step outside a lecture hall and view another lecture on our phones/laptops...I think the society would be worried about attendance plummeting if lectures were available online, but maybe registration could be required to watch them, and they could only be accessed from inside the conference center. Just a thought.
- No recording allowed? Really? I understand this rationale for very small conferences, as maybe some of the data being presented is not meant for public viewing. But this is SfN. There are over 30,000 neuroscientists here. This is not the conference to present that preliminary piece of data you want to keep on the down low. Let us record, photograph, and broadcast other’s findings. Science is a community endeavor. Communication is key.
- Anybody else see those moving truck billboards advertising science products?
- Anybody speak with the “CIA ruined my life” guy?
- Vendor swag total: 2 t-shirts, 1 Starbucks gift card, and a stapler. More t-shirts, less staplers.
- Finally, It seems like so many poster titles grab me at the beginning, and progressively lose me as the title wears on and becomes more and more constrained. Example: Neural correlates of memory during an adaptation of the Tower of Hanoi in sexually aroused APP rats during ovulation: A case for tickle therapy. Actually, I’d probably visit this poster.
